When Your Calvinism Turns On You

A few years ago, I remember hearing Phil Johnson, Executive Director of Grace to You, express concern about the rise of “Hyper‑Calvinism” and the damage it might do to the public perception of Calvinism. (I’ll reference an article at the end of this post.)
But here’s the reality Phil may not want to face: the problem isn’t Hyper‑Calvinism. The problem is Calvinism.
For decades I’ve watched people try to pin down what Calvinism actually teaches, and honestly, it’s like trying to herd cats. Every Calvinist insists their version is the “pure” version, while everyone else’s is either “Hyper‑Calvinism” or “not really Calvinism at all.” The movement has become a theological shell game—definitions shifting, boundaries blurring, and no two Calvinists agreeing on where the center even is.
The Era of the “Big Names” Is EndingNow that many of the major Calvinist influencers have either passed away or been discredited, I believe we’re entering a new season—one where people return to Scripture itself rather than relying on a man‑made doctrinal system that has historically risen and fallen in cycles (mostly fallen).
Some of the “big boys” have stepped down under pressure. Others have been exposed as stealth Calvinists who quietly take over churches and fracture them. John MacArthur is gone. R.C. Sproul is gone. John Piper has drifted into increasingly strange territory—frogs, impressions, and theological oddities.
What remains is a scattered collection of everyday, rank‑and‑file Calvinists who simply don’t carry the influence their predecessors once did. Calvinism has always been a fad, and like all fads, once the influencers fade, the influence fades with them.
The Coming Scramble—and the Coming BacklashI fully expect a wave of “wannabe” leaders to rise up and try to out‑Calvin Calvin. They’ll attempt to build credibility by doubling down on the harshest, most rigid aspects of the system. But that kind of brashness always produces backlash.
And when the backlash comes, more people will start searching the Scriptures for themselves. They’ll begin to see the inconsistencies, the contradictions, and the theological gymnastics required to keep Calvinism afloat. Many will walk away from it entirely.
Where Calvinism Is HeadedUnless another MacArthur‑level figure emerges to carry the torch, I believe Calvinism will retreat back into the shadows within the next decade. Seminaries that push it will decline. Evangelism—real evangelism—will rise again.
Within twenty years, we may see more men called into evangelistic ministry, more churches growing, and fewer congregations torn apart by stealth Calvinism. The church has weathered theological fads before, and it will weather this one too.
Internal Conflict Will Accelerate the DeclineI also anticipate public disagreements within the movement—loud, visible, and unavoidable. Some Calvinists will soften their teaching to keep people from leaving. Others will dig in harder. The fractures will widen.
We’re already seeing it: stealth Calvinists hiding their beliefs while candidating for churches because they know full disclosure would cost them the job. That alone reveals the instability of the system. If you have to hide your theology to get hired, something is deeply wrong.
ConclusionCalvinism isn’t collapsing because of Hyper‑Calvinism. It’s collapsing under the weight of its own contradictions, its own history, and its own inability to define itself consistently.
And as the influence of its major voices fades, the church may finally be ready to move forward—back to Scripture, back to evangelism, and back to the simplicity of the gospel.
